Two of my favorite people in the world, who used to be boyfriend and girlfriend, have teamed up again. I knew that Paul Thomas Anderson (‘Magnolia’, ‘There Will Be Blood’, ‘The Master’…) had been working on a video for Fiona Apple and we now have the result, a beautiful split-screens mini movie, shot with Fiona and her sister during their polyrhythmic-polyphonic performance for ‘Hot Knife’, the closing track off her 2012 album ‘The Idler Wheel is wiser than the Driver of the Screw and Whipping Cords will serve you more than Ropes will ever do’.
The video is simple and complex at the same time, with endless layers matching the song to perfection. The four minutes of it stylishly focuses on Fiona’s expressive and intense face, while she intricately harmonizes with her sister Maude Maggart, adding more split screens as the layering of the voices increase… the whole thing may just give you goosebumps. Fiona looks like a ballerina with that fragile and feisty look of hers, and you will have to note that it is shot in a wide screen just as Fiona’s heart is a ‘Cinemascope screen’ in the song.
Paul Thomas Anderson had already directed several videos for her, including ‘Across the Universe’, ‘Fast As You Can’ and ‘Paper Bag’, so watch this new one below and melt like butter on a hot knife:
