US Tour with Andy Shauf Launching November 24
Fenne Lily has today released the live session video for her song “Car Park” which was recorded at Green Man Festival in the UK. The song appears on her debut album On Hold (out now) and the session drops ahead of her first ever US tour in November, supporting Andy Shauf. Watch and share the session here.
Additionally, Fenne released a Spotify single, consisting of a reworked live studio version of fan favorite ‘More Than You Know’ as well as a cover of Angel Olsen’s ‘Unfucktheworld’. Listen here.
Speaking about the experience, Fenne shares: “Revisiting ‘More Than You Know’ alongside my band gave me the chance to see it in a stronger light; to take something I wrote feeling fragile and recreate it with the mind of someone more certain. Angel Olsen’s ‘Unfucktheworld’ has been one of my favourite pieces of songwriting since I was a kid. It’s timeless and simple yet I’ve always wanted to hear a longer, louder, more unhinged iteration of it, so we made one. The title seems more relevant than ever – we’re living in a messed up time, so I’m seeing this cover as a war cry, both personal and generational.”
On Hold, self-released in April 2018, has clocked up tens of millions of streams and Fenne has earned herself a global publishing deal with Universal Music in the process.
Fenne wrote and recorded the material that would form her debut album between the ages of 15 and 20, while touring the continent with and lending her dulcet tones to the releases of rising alt-stars such as Aldous Harding, Charlie Cunningham, and Marlon Williams. Leaving school to spend her formative teenage years on the road, Fenne walked an uncertain path, playing truant from art college to immerse herself in a life of self-taught musicianship.
The result is a tapestry of heartache and comprehension, realised in record form with the help of friend and musical ally Tamu Massif, members of Champs and legendary producer John Parish. The latter helped add permanence to ‘Brother’, a song written in a drunken black-out and nearly lost to the ether, devoted to the one boy who’s never let her down.
Although she sings about heartbreak, Fenne is quick to state that her songs aren’t about wallow-ing in misery. “My music comes from anger, but I can’t sing angrily, so I sing sadly. It’s a sad-ness that’s fueled by fury.” This is Fenne all over. She’s straight up and to the point. As she puts it herself, there’s “no fannying about” when it comes to her music and that’s what makes it all the more special. Stream ‘On Hold’ in full
Having fallen in love with a broader live sound, Fenne now plays alongside bassist Joe Sherrin (of Slonk / Milo’s Planes) and drummer Dan Lane.
Fenne and her band will embark on their first ever US tour in support of Andy Shauf. See below for US dates and European dates can be found here.
