The Gigantic List Published By Rolling Stone

People adore lists. For some reason, we like to make lists of all kinds and I had a little fun with the gigantic list published by Rolling Stone on Tuesday. They put together the 500 greatest albums of all time, a very ambitious compilation, which was originally published in 2003 and updated in 2012. They decided to do it again from scratch, asking Top-50 albums lists from more than 300 artists, producers, critics, and music industry people. Basically, they did it in a very democratically manner, and asked a large range of people; It is nevertheless somewhat funny to see albums in the list from artists who had participated in the vote, such as U2, Beyonce, Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish, and probably others…

Since Rolling Stone states that 154 albums are new additions that weren’t on the 2003 or 2012 versions, it’s a major change, a real shift, since a ton of albums has been released since Rolling Stone’s first compilation done in 2003.

Of course, the exercise is very artificial, mostly because if we had plenty of time to reflect on an album released in 1965, how can anyone decide to include an album released last year in the ‘greatest albums of all time’ list? In fact, 4 albums released in 2019 have been added to the list, Lana Del Rey’s ‘Norman Fucking Rockwell!,’ Billie Eilish’s ‘When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?,’ Kid Cudi’s ‘Man on the Moon: The End of the Day,’ and Harry Styles’ ‘Fine Line.’ But if we still listen to the Stones or the Beatles, only time will tell if people will still listen to ‘Fine Line’ in 2055.

Was this list really worth the effort? We are in 2020, 17 years after Rolling Stone’s first list, and we still see the same major rock & roll figures, the same dinosaurs of the music industry, highly represented in this list: The Beatles have 9 albums, Bob Dylan 7, Neil Young 6, The Rolling Stones 6, David Bowie 5, Led Zeppelin 5, Aretha Franklin 4, Joni Mitchell 4, Pink Floyd 4, Radiohead 4, Stevie Wonder 4, The Velvet Underground 4, The Who 4… the only exception to this? Kanye West who has 6 albums in this list! Another major change is Marvin Gaye’s ‘What’s Going On’ getting the number one spot and beating out the Beatles ‘Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.’ But no matter what, we are still talking about 50-year-old albums. Will these same classics still be included in Rolling Stone’ 2050 list? I bet that lists like these will be completely obsolete by then, but we never know.

‘One distinction from the old list is the idea that there’s not one objective history of popular music,’ says Rolling Stone’s Reviews Editor, Jon Dolan, who oversaw this year-long project. ‘I think it’s an honest reflection of how taste is now.’

It would be interesting to compare with the old list, in order to have a better idea of this taste evolution, but I just tried to see if there was a shift in taste: and it doesn’t seem there is a major one. If you look at these graphs, that compile the numbers of albums per year and per decade, the majority of the albums picked by the 300 people who have participated in the vote are still from the late ‘60s and ‘70s. This is still regarded as the golden age of music, which produced masterpieces still appreciated today. In comparison, the ‘80s look like a desert, while there is another peak in the early ‘90s and a small rebound since 2010.

But you have to wonder about the value of such an endeavor if the ‘70s are still the superior decade.
