So why am I so excited to hear that Stephen Malkmus And The Jicks are joining Super Furry Animals, oh and also the greatest guitar rock band in the world today, Screaming Females, at the Village Voice’s 4 Knots gig on Saturday, July 11, at Pier 48, Hudson River park? To put it simply, that is three great acts in a row, plus? Mikal Cronin, and for just the $25 admission ($50 for VIP).
Yeah, I haunt the first listen on NPR and seriously hit pay dirt from time to time. This week I have The Pop Group and Screaming Females new albums on heavy rotation. I might listen to these guys more than when the album is actually released.
“People would always ask, “Hey play that song about the wishing well or whatever it’s called!”… I vaguely recall my wonderful aunt mentioning that we finally had written a song she liked. So if you’re in the market for a family-friendly Screaming Females song, this is your chance”
The pace is slow, and weary, but the beat is much larger than we are used to, and while Joe has a sort of blank weird charm to him, the band look as though they’ve just arrived from 1978 –a mix of the Knack and Roxy Music. By the end of the song, Marissa is performing a sizzling solo to send it all back home.

Enough already Yusef, get off your ass and play the Beacon Theater. Meanwhile., I ended up on Stubhub for Lily Allen’s May 15th gig at Highline Ballroom
Carter Girl – Carlene Carter – Mining her Carter Family history for material, she finds it and sounds better than she ever has on this excellent collection of Carter Family songs plus a coupla ringers. Also, while we knew Vince Gill would be up to the task, so is Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson vocal additions – Album Of The Week – A-
Each band committed itself to a unique set of ideas, and it didn’t matter what other bands were doing or what the audience might expect. Screaming Females are that same kind of wide-open punk rock, from before it condensed into a style and every band had to be taken on its own terms
Any way there is always something and I plan to go on February 7th, the more mainstream of the three nights. Why? because Shellshag are playing and Shellshag are the proud owners of one of the best albums of 2013, the awesome Shellshag Forever.
