Holla Back Gwen

Holla Back Gwen

Soon Come Soon – Youth Fathers – They sound like trip hop cowboys tapping into Tricky and then stretching further. This is the most obvious track they’ve done and it isn’t very often – B+

Mamacita – Travi$ Scott – From Epic Records to GOOD Music to T.I.’s label, you can hear why the rap powers like him, this is an original Reggaeton track, but it isn’t a hot which is why he moves so much – B

The Fall – Seven Lions – California dance mixing trance with dub step, in other words a snooze – C+

the Trap – Satellite Stories – Indie rock from Finland – but don’t let that bother you, it sounds like the rest – B-

The Balance – Royal Tongues – Pleasant mix of indie rock and electronics by Buffalo duo – B

Time – Mikky Ekko  – “Your love falls down like a waterfall and I can’t withstand the tide”? Yeah, like that – C

Toast – Mike Stud – Nothing much rap – C

Lips – Marian Hill – electronic duo, this is fun and bleepy – B

Firestone – Kygo, Conrad – OMG, another Norwegian DJ sounding like Avicii after he heard Calvin Harris, my theory is it is so cold in Scandinavia they spend the long cold and dark winters huddled round their pro-tools – C+

Spark The Fire – Gwen Stefani – Ask yourself, what would you think of this kitchen sink dance track if it wasn’t Gwen? It is a mediocre dance track with a fun hook for sure, but it ain’t no hollaback girl, the “hey get off my cloud” is a nice line in patter but like many an aging zeitgeist bearer before, she seems a step behind- B

Never Let Go Og The Microscope – Enter Shakira – A real drag of a track, the sinking feeling they mention in the hook is for a reason – C

I Followed You Home – Eliot Sumner – Not bad dance track, her Information EP earlier this year was a tasty morsel and this has a stampede of beats and a mid paced ballad. Her dad is famous but who wants to be judged on their family?  – B

Gray Duck – Doomtree – No more rhyming with Nintendo please… from the twin cities but that’s no excuse – B+

Heart It Races – Dr. Dog – I haven’t take these guys seriously since their lousy performance at the Prince tribute, this has a nice chorus – B

The Days – Avicii – This is a keeper on the new EP, very handclapping, pop flicked big ballad -One Direction could cover it – B+

Can’t Hold Us Down – Axwell/Ingrosso – Two thirds of Swedish House Music perform heads down no nonsense House – A-
