Ryan Adams Is Recording Taylor Swift’s 1989 Album In the Style Of The Smiths

I stumbled on this story and it took me a while before realizing it was not a joke…. Is Ryan Adams’ creative pipe drying out that he is recording a whole album of others’ songs? Or is he riding the Taylor Swift’s successful wave? I am not sure this new project is quite bizarre: Ryan Adams is recording Taylor Swift’s famous album 1989 in its entirety in the style of the Smiths.

May be it is an exercise of style, some homework he gave to himself, or a challenge? A new hobby or a mid-life crisis? Whatever, the two musicians have exchanged some Twitter/Instagram love and Taylor is ecstatic about the project.

‘Guaranteed saddest version of ‘Welcome to New York’ ever — or your tears back,’ wrote Ryan with an annotated copy of the song’s lyrics… ‘deep end Smiths vibe,’ he wrote along ‘Blank Space’ lyrics.

‘I will pass out,’ replied Taylor,… ‘Yes. Just finished Style. Badass tunes, Taylor. : )  We’re sandblasting them and they’re holding steady,’ replied Adams… ‘Cool I’m not gonna be able to sleep tonight or ever again and I’m going to celebrate today every year as a holiday. I’M CALM,’ she wrote back…

I know that Adams was supporting the Haim sisters at the beginning of their career, he even got on stage with them when they were playing at the Echo one night, and since they are best friends with Taylor, I can understand the connection, but I am still surprised, is he that desperate for headlines? And does he really think she writes her songs by herself as he does?Swift has probably an army of writers and producers behind her albums, Adams is rather a one-man-does-it-all, so I would not consider them equal.

But the best part should come from the Morrissey-Johnny Marr camp, what do they think about this? I can already imagine Morrissey’s reaction, he has already said Swift was a rank fraud, so he will probably have a heart attack if the news reach his ears….
