This list would have probably been more appropriate around Halloween, but it is always appropriate to remember about the dead ones, and to be thankful to be alive. Rock stars die too, they even die sooner most of the time, the ‘live fast, die young’ thing unfortunately. It’s not true for all of them of course, but drug overdoses, plane crashes and suicides are part of the rock ‘n roll life. You actually can fit most of the rock star deaths into a few categories:
Death due to a drug overdose or related to drugs:

• Michael Jackson (1958-2009): The King of pop died after he suffered cardiac arrest caused by the combination of drugs propofol, along with two anti-anxiety benzodiazepines.

• Dee Dee Ramone (1952-2002): The Ramones’ bassist died of a fatal heroin OD and was found by his wife Barbara at his Hollywood apartment.

• Layne Staley (1967–2002): the Alice in Chains frontman died in his apartment doing drugs and was found only two weeks later after his accountant noticed he hadn’t spent any money for a while.

• Keith Moon (1946–1978): The Who drummer choked on his vomit after OD on 32 tablets of Clomethiazole (Heminevrin), a medication he had been prescribed to alleviate his alcohol withdrawal symptoms

• Sid Vicious (1957–1979): The Sex Pistols’ bassist overdosed on heroin a few months while on bail for the stabbing of his girlfriend Nancy Spungen at New York’s Chelsea Hotel.

• John Bonham (1948-1980): The Led Zeppelin drummer died after consuming forty shots of vodka which resulted in him vomiting, causing asphyxiation.

• Bon Scott: (1946 -1980): The AC/DC singer passed out after a night of heavy drinking in a London club, and the autopsy revealed that alcohol pulmonary aspiration of vomit was the cause of his death.

• Darby Crash (1959–1980): The singer of L.A. punk act the Germs committed suicide by heroin overdose, at 22, just 24 hours before John Lennon died.

• Gram Parsons (1946–1973): The cult figure who participated to many bands (the International Submarine Band, The Byrds and The Flying Burrito Brothers) died from an overdose of morphine and alcohol at the Joshua Tree Inn in California while searching for UFOs; his body was stolen from the airport by his road manager and cremated in the desert by pouring five gallons of gasoline into the open coffin and throwing a lit match inside.

• Janis Joplin (1943-1970): She overdosed in Hollywood’s Landmark hotel, when, according to her road manager, was given heroin which was much more potent than normal.

• Jim Morrison (1943-1971): The Doors singer died of a suspected heroin overdose, as he was found in a Paris apartment bathtub, but the absence of autopsy has left many questions regarding his cause of death, and numerous stories around his death and the role of his girlfriend Pamela Courson have since circulated.

• Jimi Hendrix (1942-1970): He died after choking on his own vomit after taking an overdose of barbiturate, but again several theories around the correct circumstances of his death circulate.
Death by plane crash:

• Aaliyah (1979–2001): The R&B singer died in a plane crash while traveling from The Bahamas to Florida, after they completed filming the music video for Rock the Boat.

• Ronnie Van Zant (1948-1977): the Lynard Skynard leader died in a plane crash between Greenville, South Carolina to Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Bandmates Steve Gaines, Cassie Gaines, assistant road manager Dean Kilpatrick also died.

• Budy Holly (1936-1959) and Ritchie Valens (1941-1959) both died in the same plane crash flying to Minnesota, soon after taking off from nearby Mason City. Bandmate Waylon Jennings gave up his seat on the plane,

• Otis Redding (1941-1967): The soul singer was killed when his airplane crashed into Lake Monona in Madison, Wisconsin.
Death by murder:

• Darrell Abbott (1966–2004): The Pantera guitarist was shot repeatedly onstage by deranged gunman Nathan Gale, while performing in Columbus, Ohio.

• The Notorious B.I.G. (1972-1997): The rap icon was murdered in a drive-by shooting in Los Angeles while returning to his hotel after attending a party, but his murder remains unsolved.

• Tupac Shakur (1971-1996): The rapper was murdered in a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas, and many independent investigations and theories have emerged.

• Selena (1971-1995): the Spanish star was shot by her No. 1 fan, her fan club president, Yolanda Saldivar.

• Marvin Gaye (1939-1984): The soul singer was shot dead by his father after an argument about misplaced business documents.

• John Lennon (1940-1980): When he and Ono were returning to their New York apartment in The Dakota, the ex-Beatles was murdered by stalker Mark Chapman.

• Bobby Fuller (1942-1966): The rock singer was found dead in his automobile, in Hollywood,
and the police considered he committed suicide. However, many believe he was murdered because he was found with multiple wounds all over his body and covered in gasoline and because of his connection to a mafia related woman.

• Sam Cooke (1931-1964): The R&B-soul singer songwriter was shot by Bertha Franklin, a motel manager during self-defense because he had threatened her. But details of the case are still in dispute.
Death by accident

• Nico (1938-1988): The Velvet Underground girl died from a severe cerebral hemorrhage after hitting her head as she had fallen from a bicycle.

• Cliff Burton (1962-1986): The Metallica bass guitarist died in a bus accident, as he was thrown through the window of the bus, which fell on top of him, crushing him to his death.

• Marc Bolan (1947-1977): The T-Rex singer died in a car accident, when he was the passenger of a car driven by his girlfriend Gloria Jones as they were heading home from a drinking club and restaurant in Berkeley Square.

Death by heart attack

• Luther Vandross (1951-2005): The soul singer died of complications after a stroke at John F. Kennedy Medical Center in Edison, New Jersey

• Maurice Gibb (1949-2003): The Bee Gees died at a hospital in Miami Beach, Florida, after a heart attack during an intestinal surgery hospital.

• Joe Strummer (1952-2002) The Clash frontman died suddenly in his home due to an undiagnosed congenital heart defect.

• John Phillips (1935-2001): The Mammas and Papas leader died in Los Angeles of heart failure.

• Frank Sinatra (1915-1998): The Rat Pack leader died of a heart attack at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, in Beverly Hills.

• Jerry Garcia (1942-1995): The Grateful Dead leader’s body was discovered in his room at the rehabilitation clinic where he died of a heart attack after years of heroin addiction.

• Elvis Presley (1935-1977): The King of Rock & Roll died of a heart attack and was found unresponsive on his bathroom floor. But he suffered from glaucoma, high blood pressure, liver damage, and an enlarged colon, due to drug abuse.

• Cass Elliot (1941-1974): Contrary to the urban myth stating that she died choking on a ham sandwich, Mama Cass died of a heart attack, as no food was found in her windpipe.
Death by various diseases

• Rick James (1950–2004): The super freak star was found dead in his Burbank, California home due to pulmonary failure and cardiac failure with various health conditions of diabetes, stroke, a pacemaker, and a heart attack.

• Johnny Ramone (1948-2004): The punk guitarist died of prostate cancer

• Ray Charles (1930-2004): The soul, gospel, country, blues legend died due to complications from liver disease.

• Johnny Cash (1932-2003): The country star died due to complications from diabetes, fewer than four months after his wife.

• Warren Zevon (1947–2003): The heavy smoker singer-songwriter died of lung cancer a year after being diagnosed with cancer and given three months to live.

• Barry White (1944-2003): The very large soul singer died due to kidney failure resulting from hypertension.

• Joey Ramone (1951-2001): The punk rocker died of lymphoma.

• George Harrison (1943-2001): The quiet ex-Beatles died of lung and brain cancer

• Curtis Mayfield (1942–1999): The soul pioneer died due to his declining health subsequent to his paralysis after a 1990 onstage accident.

• Carl Wilson (1946-1998): The Beach Boys guitarist died from brain and lung cancer.

• Freddie Mercury (1946-1991): The Queen frontman died of pneumonia caused by AIDS.

• Eric Carr (1950-1991): The KISS drummer died a brain hemorrhage caused by cancer cells.

• Tom Fogerty (1941-1990): The Creedence Clearwater Revival guitarist died from a tuberculosis infection after having contracted HIV from blood transfusions.

• Bob Marley (1945-1981): The reggae superstar died of brain, lung and liver cancer
Death by drowning

• Dennis Wilson (1944-1983): The Beach Boys drummer drowned at Marina Del Rey, in Los Angeles after drinking all day.

• Jeff Buckley (1966–1997): The indie icon went swimming in the Mississippi River, and, his body was found several days later. His death was ruled as an accidental drowning.

• Brian Jones (1942–1969): The ex-Rolling Stones guitarist was discovered at the bottom of his swimming pool, but many stories about a possible murder have circulated since.

Death by suicide:
Johnny Ace (1929-1954): The blues singer may have killed himself playing Russian roulette, but it was also reported he had been playing with the gun, pointing the gun at his girlfriend and another woman and then pointing the gun toward himself.

• Michael Hutchence (1960-1997): Although the death of the INXS singer is not clear it was declared he died by autoerotic asphyxiation as he was found hanging naked on the back of a hotel room door, having inadvertently strangled himself while masturbating.

• Kurt Cobain (1967-1994): The Nirvana frontman was found with a self-inflicted shotgun across his body, and a very high dose of heroin in his body. Since his death has been the subject of a lot of theories as some have for example declared that the dose of drug he had in his body was so important it was could not have injected himself and still have been able to pull the trigger.

• Ian Curtis (1956-1980): The epileptic Joy Division’s singer hanged himself in the kitchen of his house.
