Live Through This: rock nyc’s Top Concert Picks Week Of September 9th, 2019

Back in 2012, after seeing Tyler, The Creator, with Odd Future , at Hammerstein Ballroom (here), I dubbed them the best Wolf Gang around. Ever since that I’ve been called to Tyler, until Flower Boy and this year’s excellent IGOR. Whatever I felt (and back then his childishness tripped him up all the time), in 2019 he has grown into his role as sexually ambivalent art rap, one man abattoir. So can we be friends? Catch Tyler at Madison Square Garden on Thursday.
Monday – Dominic Fike – Bowery Ballroom
Monday – Barns Courtney: The 404 Tour – Webster Hall – The rocker can be a touch precious but the new album certainly gives him the right.
Monday – Ghostface Killah – Sony Hall – So prolific I bet it is a blast watching him working on the setlist
Tuesday, Wednesday – Deerhunter + Dirty Projectors – Art rock meets Americana meets indie from back when Brooklyn was the center of the universe
Tuesday – Fontaines DC – Bowery Ballroom
Tuesday – Raphael Saadiq – MHOW – It is as though you can’t say his name without adding bitterly disappointing… including the new Jimmy Lee. But at least he is disappointing on his own personal timetable.
Tuesday – Banks – Brooklyn Steel
Tuesday – Berlin – City Winery – They will still take your breath away
Wednesday – The Selecter – Gramercy Theatre – No, the Selecter weren’t your least favorite Two Tone band, that would be Bad Manners. But even if they had been, how bad is that?
Wednesday – Iggy Pop – Kaufmann Concert Hall – Just released the worst album of his career so… caveat emptor, dudes.
Wednesday, Thursday, Friday – Pat Metheny Side-Eye w/ James Francies & Marcus Gilmore – Sony Hall – The advent of streaming hit many musicians but maybe none more than older jazz guys like the legendary Pat Metheny
Thursday – Ezra Furman – Bowery Ballroom – No, 12 Nudes wasn’t the masterpiece we hoped for… it wasn’t bad, either.
Thursday, Friday – Mika – Brooklyn Steel
Thursday – Pup – Terminal 5
Friday – Chris Brown Indigoat Tour – Prudential Center
Friday – Peter Frampton Finale – The Final Tour – MSG
Friday – Alesso – Brooklyn Mirage
Saturday – Chris Brown Indigoat Tour – Barclay Center
Saturday – Jesse Malin – Webster Hall
Saturday – Jethro Tull – Forest Hills Stadium – I wish Ian would perform Stand Up
Saturday – Brandi Carlile – Madison Square Garden
Saturday – Charlie Wilson – Ford Amphitheater at Coney Island Boardwalk – The soul giant was great at Barclay Center in 2017 (here)
Saturday – Slowthai – MHOW – English rap has exploded in the UK over the past two years and Slowthai, the politically charged newbie behind Nothing Great About Britain, is great British enough to gets wow over here in nyc.
Sunday – Black Uhuru – Sony Hall
Sunday – The Who: Moving On! – Jones Beach – Plus orchestra, they were great at MSG the other week (here)
