Live Through This: rock nyc’s Top Concert Picks For The Week Of October 7th, 2019
Two of my closest friends think i,i is a masterpiece, but I can’t hear it myself. That certainly won’t stop me from going to Barclay Center on Friday to see it performed live, last time they played in town, in 2016, I saw em twice (here) and they were an astonishing creation. Always better on stage than on record, this one should make it or break it for where we place i,i in their catalog. The great Yo La Tengo are opening.
Monday, Tuesday – Lucky Daye – Bowery Ballroom
Monday – Phil Collins Still Not Dead Yet, Live! – Madison Square Garden – Twenty years ago, at this very venue, I got through three songs by Phil, so I have no idea why I’ve been thinking on this one all week…
Monday – Madonna – Howard Glickman Opera House – Now I’ve finally caught it, I can say with certainty that if you love Madonna, it is worth all the aggravation… and anyway, isn’t punishing your audience a valid artistic statement (here)
Monday – Saturday (Check availability here) Robert Glasper – The Blue Note – I’m eyeballing the J Dilla tribute…
Tuesday – MercyMe Imagine Nation Tour – Radio City Music Hall – Huge Christian Contemporary band
Tuesday – Deep Purple: The Long Goodbye Tour – Beacon Theatre – They’re a highway star…
Tuesday – Common Let Love Tour – Apollo Theatre
Wednesday – Big Thief – Brooklyn Steel – If this was at the Beacon it would be a no brainer, I just can’t take the thought of standing for hours…
Thursday, Friday, Saturday – DoNYC Presents Mason Ramsey – Gramercy Theatre – This is the kid with the scary baritone
Thursday, Friday – MUNA – MHOW
Thursday – Melvins / Redd Kross – Warsaw
Friday – Lewis Capaldi – Brooklyn Steel
Friday – Renaissance: Ashes are Burning – 50th Anniversary Tour – The English proggers
Friday – Chace Rice – Playstation Theatre – If you are planning to pay your respects before Playstation closes at the end of the year, the country cat is one way to do it
Saturday – Mike Watt + the Missingmen – Mercury Lounge – Yes, the Minuteman himself… who on earth is booking Mercury Lounge nowadays?
Saturday – Bethel Music presents Victory Tour – Kings Theatre – The Godheads are in
Saturday – Wilco – Radio City Music Hall – You know how you wait for hours for Madonna to get on stage? Well, the waiting part is just like a typical Wilco concert.
Saturday – Titus Andronicus – Monty Hall – Wow, I nearly didn’t even bother giving em a shout out… mostly because it’s Jersey City. The two songs that survived from their last great album, The Most Lamentable Tragedy, are also the best.
