Live Through This: rock nyc’s Top Concert Picks For The Week Of January 7th, 2019
I went to catch Steve Earle at his winter City Winery residency twice in a month last year and I’m a better man for the experience. Like Earle himself, I’ve been all over the place when it comes to his career though I still claim the golden age was the post-prison “I Feel Alright” country rocker and the more political and the more folkie he got, the worst he became. But the solo acoustic Steve is a must see, at least once. So go and see it on Tuesday, as the good man noted: “Never say never, never give up, cherish the good, and you never can tell”.
Monday – Goldilocks, JRG, Spark Anthony, Mike Lo – Knitting Factory
Monday – Africa Meets Cuba! feat. Bakithi Kumalo, Tosin Aribisala, Havana Maestros, Jomion & The Uklos, Ebrima Jassey & DJ Henri – Highline Ballroom – If it didn’t start at 9pm I’d love to see it.
Wednesday – Jesse Malin plays The Fine Art of Self Destruction in Full plus more – Coney Island Baby – I didn’t hate D Generation but Jesse’s solo stuff has left me ice cold -not unlike their beer.
Friday – Denny Laine And The Moody WIngs – City Winery – I saw him last year at the late lamented BB Kings (here) and he was excellent, but his decision to perform Band On The Run and 1965’s The Magnificent Moodies, hits me as a truly lousy one. Also, let’s hope that the Moody Wings is the Cryers under a different name. Still, risk it.
Friday – Big Freedia – Brooklyn Bowl
Saturday – Dave East – Irving Plaza – The old school Harlem rapper, man can he spit it.
Sunday – Adam Pascal & Anthony Rapp – The Original Stars of Rent – Sony Hall – Rapp has had a busy time of it, between featuring in the new Star Trek space opera and #metooing James Spacey, Adam has had a more typical career since his “Rent ” days. This should be a fine show.
