A month ago, Paul Simon announced he will be releasing a new album while revisiting old songs that he said ‘were odd enough to be overlooked the first time around’. Over these past weeks, he has been releasing a few of these freshly rearranged songs on YouTube, with the last one in date, ‘René and Georgette Magritte With Their Dog After the War’ just today.

Produced by Simon himself and his long-time collaborator Roy Halee, ‘In The Blue Light’ is his 14th studio album, set to be released on September 7th. The 10 featured songs were selected by the famous singer songwriter and redone with notable collaborations, consisting of a talented cast of musicians, including jazz icons trumpeter Wynton Marsalis, guitarist Bill Frisell, and drummers Jack DeJohnette and Steve Gadd, while ‘Can’t Run But’ and ‘Rene and Georgette Magritte with Their Dog After the War’ were recorded with the New York-based chamber ensemble sextet yMusic.

Simon not only added fresh musical arrangements but also some unexpected lyric alterations: ‘Re-doing arrangements, harmonic structures, and lyrics that didn’t make their meaning clear, gave me time to clarify in my own head what I wanted to say, or realize what I was thinking and make it more easily understood,’ declared Paul Simon back in July

The chosen songs cover his long solo career, as they from originally appeared on ‘There Goes Rhymin’ Simon’ (1973) or ‘Still Crazy After All These Years’ (1975), or on a more recent one such as ‘So Beautiful Or So What’ (2011),

‘It’s an unusual occurrence for an artist to have the opportunity to revisit earlier works and re-think them; to modify, even completely change parts of the originals,’ declared Simon. ‘Happily, this opportunity also gave me the gift of playing with an extraordinary group of musicians, most of whom I hadn’t recorded with before. I hope the listener will find these new versions of old songs refreshed, like a new coat of paint on the walls of an old family home.’

Some fans will certainly appreciate the new versions, and others will surely stay attached to the old ones, it’s always difficult to change something that many think to be already perfect!  The new strings on ‘Rene and Georgette Magritte with Their Dog After the War’, slow down the song while giving it a chamber-music vibe, while they spice up ‘Can’t Run But’ with many cinematic layers and those who have attended one of the shows of his last farewell tour, will certainly recognize this version, which was performed on stage.
