I saw the band Stars At Night at the Hi Hat when they opened for Le Butcherettes a few weeks ago, and I immediately noticed the women’s matching shiny red boots,… this LA’s underground band was quite the scene! But of course this was just a minor detail, this fierce quartet of females launched a wild sonic number, loud enough to wound a few eardrums.

Stars At Night make some high-energy powerful punk rock music, a bit on the dirty side with plenty of attitude, the band is fronted by Janelle Obert on vocals and guitar, while Seleste Diaz is on guitar, Liz Banuelos on bass and the almighty Joana Rubio probably goes through drum sets as fast as I go through pencils. this woman has some energy… If they claim influences coming from Black Sabbath to Yeah Yeah Yeahs, you can certainly say that Obert can easily demonstrate that she has some of Karen O’s fierceness and fearlessness when she rolls her back on stage during a climatic rock ‘n’ roll moment.

The band has announced a new 3-song EP ‘Rule This City’ along with music video for the single ‘Rule This City’, a title which sounds appropriate, considering the strong impression they made on everyone when I saw them.

Recorded, produced, and mixed in Los Angeles at CocoVera Space by Alejandra Robles of Le Butcherettes and mastered by Chris Common, the three songs showcases Obert’s fearless vocals often grow into a haunting howl, while gritty guitars fuel the savage energy running through the first song ‘Lizard’. ‘Rule This City’ is a bilingual English/Spanish song wandering into a dark psychedelia, although I am not sure of what’s going on during this cultish-murder dinner? The gritty and ferocious ‘Toxic’ sounds like a late night drive looking for trouble, with Liz Banuelos’ bass going in the deep. Live, this band is loud and attention-seeker, in a good way, they want to leave some marks and I am not only talking about Joana Rubio’ deep grooves left on the skin of her drums

The EP ‘RULE THIS CITY’ will be released on November 8th

1. LIZARD
2. RULE THIS CITY  (SINGLE)
3. TOXIC
