There really is no way to not conclude Wonder’s three hour take on the double album and EP from 1976 was anything less than a mix of stunt and statement… it is as great as anything these writers have claimed it is… however, it is no better than any of the other times I’ve seen Stevie live performing a greatest hits set.” I wrote those words (here) last year and if you think I would miss another shot at it after my good friend John Duffin invited me to join him to watch Stevie Wonder perform Songs In The Key Of Life at the Prudential Center on Wednesday, you are greatly mistaken.

CMJ’s 35th Anniversary: October 13-17, 2015 – Various Places – Every year it is difficult for me to give this festival its due so when I didn’t get an application to cover it, I didn’t bother pursuing. However, I hope to get to Pianos for that Saturday afternoon series of concerts, not crazy about the performers but I never am till after I’ve seen em.

Tuesday – Hopsin – irving Plaza – The Ruthless Records “Sag My Pants” rapper.

Tuesday – PRhyme – Gramercy Theatre – Eminem’s buddy Royce da 5’9″ is half of this gangsta duo.

Tuesday – Panda Bear – Bowery Ballroom – Terrific the last time I saw him, a coupla years ago, on stage, his intensity makes up for a lot. And that Crosswords EP is excellent.

Wednesday – The Front Bottoms – Irving Plaza – I am very ambivalent over this band, and the one time I saw em live they were terrible. Even so, the album is a deep voice of a generation thing.

Friday – Evans The Death – Niagra – If I can slip out of work for an hour I am so there.

Friday – Titus Andronicus – Warsaw – If they’d play the city I’d be there like that.

Saturday – The Wonder Years – Webster Hall – Proof that there is nothing much harder than following up your biggest album, and no great shakes live either but still… the voice of a generation as well.

Saturday – Gwen Stefani – Hammerstein Ballroom – She was terrific when I saw her solo at MSG ten years ago, and terrific with No Doubt at Global Citizen

Saturday – Dionne Warwick – BB Kings – Nice room for the great song interpreter
