What The World Needs Now – Andra Day – Yes, that “world,” the Dionne Warwick was a masterpiece of course, but now we know what Billie Holiday would’ve done with it… she’d have done a lot. Warwick had a terrific voice the way Diana Ross had a terrific voice, it mellowed out the emotions, but Andra rips the hope and turns it to a Gospel prayer – B+

Can We Hang On – Cold War Kids – This has the same DNA as their only good song, “Coffee Spoon,” but with a quirkier rhythm and a Gospel vocal – B-

Preludes – Craig Finn – “I came back to St. Paul and things had progressed and got strange,” Finn sings like less a self-portrait and more a self-parody. This adds little to the show we’ve known for all these years and yet it does the job as well as he can – B

Hula Hoop – Daddy Yankee – His most novelty of novelty songs, so catchy it would be irritating if you listened to the Latin American pop charts –which you don’t but should – B+

Carefully Taught – India.Arie, Billy Pope – The Rodgers And Hammerstein anti-racism song from “South Pacific” given a pathetic soft soul rewrite – C

Remember me – Jennifer Hudson – Somebody forgot to write the song, maybe if Hudson had covered Ross (this is generic r&B, not the classic), she’d have something worth listening to – C+

City Of Stars And Medley – John Legend – The movie wasn’t that great is this is somnambulism put to song – C-

Go Off – Liv Uzi Vert – Straight outta Philly, two mixtapes and a starring role in “Bad And Boujee” later, this is typical of current hip hop and while I think it is as dank and stank as trap gets, I can’t believe it will be a hit. But it will – B-

Show Yourself – Mastadon – Not your father’s thrash, not really thrash at all, more like Metallica in pop mode. It is quietly disarming metal – B-

Best You Ever – Michelle Branch – Produced by Patrick Carney and they deserve each other – C-

Gucci On My – Mike Will Made It, Migos, YG, 21 Savage – he produced both :Black Beatle” and “Black Barbie” so Mike Will Made It is ready to come into his own, this is the same ol’ trap beat and arch flow as we’ve become used to – B-

Feel It Still – Portugal. The Man – Catchy soul rocker, nicely done – B
