Going Steady: New Singles Reviewed 1-1-17

Throw Myself A Party – Cashmere Cat – Norwegian DJ with an ear for electronic moodiness, and here he finds the right hook for it all. The rap is generic but the hook is magnetic and after a quiet coupla years the popular Lana Del Rey re-moxer is back. It didn’t hit the Billboard 200 but did OK on the EDM charts – C+

Flower On The Vine – Kelly Willis – The bridge isn’t great but everything else is timeless Kellyish country pop, full of bubblegum melody and beautiful singing, the strings seem to never lose sight of her – B+

Say Something Loving – The xx – The official first song of 2017 is another preview of the xx’s upcoming albums, poppier with much less of the dark shadings so often their calling card. When I saw em at the Hammerstein a coupla years ago, the stage was so dark I didn’t see em at the Hammerstein. But this is a brighter hue for all its romantic back and forth – B-

Yeah, nothing much here but you have to start somewhere, right? And so here starts 2017.
