symbol – Adrianne Lenker – A minor masterpiece from the Big Thief leader, as beautiful and quietly determined as its central concept, time is the currency love uses to realize itself, just a strummed guitar but it completely gets you – A

La Diabla – Alex Sensation, Nicky Jam – Two top Latin pop sensations, Alex is a central figure in 2018 reggaeton as he rules La Mega radio station. This is a direct reggaeton hit with a fabulous beat pattern – B+

NOLA – Asiahn – The Dre find from Compton with a solid neo-r&b track – B

Here Tonight – Brett Young – Dreadful country love song, that bridge has to go – C-

Stole Your Car – Charlotte Lawrence – 18 year old pop girl gets her revenge on a guy, of course  Lisa “Left Eye” woulda taught her how it is really done, the late great TLC burnt her ex’s house down. – B

El Peor – Chyno Miranda, J Balvin – The former Chino and Nacho is so big that J Balvin is the lucky one on this average Latin pop song – C+

Want To – Dua Lipa – Sometimes one song is enough to turn you on to a singer, I caught Dua at Governors Ball two years ago and that didn’t do it, but “One Kiss” this year did. Her voice is all undertow and here the sample is quite unique -the co-producer is  Stephen Kozmeniuk who was responsible for the biggest rap song of the past five years, Kendrick’s “The Blacker The Berry” – B

Piston – Deathpact – Industrial electronica – C+

White Boi – Dillon Francis, Lao Ra – The Bogota survivor has been doing a lot of political pop-rap, here she goes all pop all the way – B

Here I Am – from the Dumplin’ Original Motion Picture Soundtrack – Dolly Parton, Sia – A superb version of Dolly’s 1971 song and really, both Dolly and Sia can sing with anyone and sound good, and they sound glorious together here – B+

Survive (feat. Emeli Sandé, Gucci Mane) – Don Diablo, Emeli Sandé, Gucci Mane – Gucci’s verse is so un-Gucci like, there is a restrained older world non-trap vibe, Emeli sounds good – C+

Hallelujah Here Below – Elevation Worship – Bigscale CCM ballad, seven fucking minutes of it  – MUST TO AVOID – C-

Monsters – Eric Church – Yeah got it, there are monsters and then there are monsters , but the song is very soundly constructed… it might be a grower – C+

Too Real – FIDLAR – “‘Too Real’ was written during the election and everyone was fighting each other. The reality is that everyone fuckin’ sucks. Why can’t we all just get along/bong?” – Yeah, I agree, give the world some weed and we will all be too mellow to fight – B-

Wake Up in the Sky – Gucci Mane, Bruno Mars, Kodak Black – Ho hum Guc, Bruno is wasted – C+

SLOW DANCING IN THE DARK – Joji – Sweet electronic ballad by the Japanese sensation, all the action is on the backing tracks – B-

I Love It (& Lil Pump) – Kanye West, Lil Pump – Catchy as hell, Lil Pump is terrific and Kweezy is still releasing standalone songs and this is the second one that is pure and simple fun – B+

Cover The Earth – Kari Jobe, Cody Carnes – Overblown (is there any other kind) CCM by blowhard chick Christ girl – C-

Better – Khalid – He sounds like The Weeknd without the drugs – C

Mariners Apartment Complex – Lana Del Rey – Co-produced by Jack Antonoff, this is a straight up work of compelling beauty, a dreamy yet strong, minimal but with so many touches, and positive despite its fate -SINGLE OF THE WEEK – A

Drip Too Hard – Lil Baby, Gunna – I wasn’t crazy about Lil Baby’s debut album despite loving his voice, this has one of the hookiest choruses you’ll hear -Gunna is big time and let’s all give thanks to Young Thug – B+

Ruby’s Stool – Loretta Lynn – Loretta wants to send Ruby to fist city – B+

All My Life – Major Lazer, Burna Boy – Burna Boy’s too much percodan voice works well with a reggae lilt – B

GTFO – Mariah Carey – Mariah ain’t stretching herself but the song is song enough and her presence is golden… note the Drake connection – B

I Hope to Cure Myself of You – Mija – Electronic mood dance track with spoken word – B

Song About You – Mike Posner –  Mike is good for a great, top of the charts, song every five years or so, and it’s not this one though the hook is sturdy – B

Thugz Mansion (feat. Ty Dolla $ign & YG) – Mozzy, Ty Dolla $ign, YG – Nothing much going on here, ordinary hip hop – C+

Mad at You – Noah Cyrus, Gallant – Dog EDM song, such a pity after the duet with her main squeeze Lil Xan was so great last month – C-

Sincerity Is Scary – The 1975 – The horns are so weird here but they save the song from ordinariness and weak verses  – B-

Pistol On My Side (P.O.M.S) (feat. Lil Wayne) – Swizz Beatz, Lil Wayne – First rate Weezy verses and a terrific sample – B+

Silvery Sometimes (Ghosts) – The Smashing Pumpkins – I know what I wrote about the concert, and I stand by it, and I still think this is Billy’s  best song in DECADES, completely addictive pop moment – B+
