What Are We Frightened Of? – Alberta Cross – UK folkie variant on Americana – B-

Something Real – Armin van Buuren, Avian Grays, Jordan Shaw – Trance meets mainstream EDM, Armin is a past master of course, with skills to spare, but this defines average – C+

DOLLAR – Becky G, Myke Towers – “LBD” deserved to be huge, it wasn’t, and her performance at the “Amazon Prime Day” gig was bland, a smart trap beat doesn’t help this mid-tempo bore – C+

bad guy (with Justin Bieber) – Billie Eilish, Justin Bieber – Hang around for Bieber’s howl, he Epstein’s all over the nearly legal Billie – B+

Faith – Bon Iver – The best of Bon Iver’s recent release of four songs, Justin uses electronics to place a metaphysical haze on disbelief – SINGLE OF THE WEEK – A-

Jelmore – Bon Iver – The first time I heard “Jelmore,” I thought my earbuds were phasing in and out, but the hook is an iffy synth transmission – B+

Town Ain’t Big Enough – Chris Young, Lauren Alaina – With a baritone like Chris’s, he oversings when he breathes,  and there isn’t much more than the boom on a predictable bust with Lauren trying to keep up – C

Thing For You (With Martin Solveig) – David Guetta, Martin Solveig –  Guetta all but invented EDM pop with the Black Eyed Peas  in 2009. Martin is also French and also a DJ. The song is quietly addictive house – B

All This Time – Deorro – LA DJ – C+

Miss Me? – dvsn – Toronto r&b duo reminds you why the Weeknd is so great – C

Wiggle It (feat. City Girls) – French Montana, City Girls – City Girls are always fun, French Montana has never made it as a rapper though his chart instincts are OK here – C+

100 Shooters (feat. Meek Mill & Doe Boy) – Future, Meek Mill, Doe Boy – This year’s six song EP  Save Me, was as troubling as Future ever can be and great (though it didn’t do much), “100 Shooters” is a speeded up cough syrup track – B+

Tenderness – Jay Som – DIY dream pop as produced by Burt Bacharach – B

10 Bands – Joyner Lucas, Timbaland – Impressive, smooth flow with a staccato ear slap beat – B

Ready Set (feat. Big Sean) – Kash Doll, Big Sean – Kash is having a good year, here is her second single after appearing with Iggy Azalea on an Iggy song, and after featuring Lil Wayne earlier in 2019, she has Big Sean now and he sounds very cool  and distant – B

Tip of My Tongue – Kenny Chesney – What is his story anyway? My bet is it is Kenny who thinks his tractor’s sexy – MUST TO AVOID – D+

My Best Life (feat. Mike Waters) – KSHMR, Mike Waters – Ho hum house – C

Old Town Road – Remix – Lil Nas X, Billy Ray Cyrus, Young Thug, Mason Ramsey – This is a terrific idea, not just Young Thug but pint sized Mason? Works fine – B+

Same Drugs – Matt Nathanson, Patrick Stump – Years into his career, “Same Drugs” feels like Chance The Rapper got lucky, Matt is absolutely masterful proving the point, it is  better than Matt’s “Laid” cover – A-

Look What I’ve Become – Mike Posner, Ty Dolla $ign – “I Took A Pill In Ibiza” was a miracle (for both Posner and Seeb) and miracles are a bad way to forge a career – C+

Brow of My Beloved – Morrissey – Morrissey’s politics are inexcusable and his people want to be with people who are similar to them is racism 101, and what else? He killed on Broadway earlier this year and I prefer the dramatic bummer “Brow Of My Beloved” to anything on his covers album – B+

Jarreau Of Rap (Skatt Attack) – Nas, Al Jarreau, Keyon Harrold – Astounding piece of rapping to an Al Jarreau classic – B+

Say It – Phantoms, Anna Clendening – The best piece of EDM of the week is catchy, more disco-y, than its predecessors – B-

On My Way – Phora – Mix of r&b and downbeat melodic soundcloud – C+

Black Snow – Pussy Riot, Mara 37 – Pussy Riot are, quite, quite literally, the only band whose agitprop gets em in jail, “Black Snow,” an open letter to Putin about environmental destruction set to “London Bridge Is Falling Down,” is no “Make America Great Again” (their best song by far) but it sure makes its point – B+

Detective – Rauw Alejandro – Puerto Rican dance guy, catchy and smart  battling beats pulling hm both ways and dancehall the diviner between the two – B

Go Up (feat. Roddy Ricch) – Rich The Kid, Roddy Ricch – Second generation trap star, he sounds great here, if anybody wants to know what trap sounds like, it sounds like this – B

How This Feels – R.LUM.R – Mood r&b – B-

Mean That Much (feat. MORGAN) – Rudimental, Preditah, Morgan – One of the bands best moments in awhile, soul dance stuff made for the hips and also for Studio 54 – B

I’m Fakin – Sabrina Carpenter – Not bad but no “Pushing 20” – B-

Crash Into Me – Steve Aoki, Darren Criss – A Dave Matthews cover and Steve nearly pulls it off – C+

Everything Is Broken – Sheryl Crow, Jason Isbell – Hard rocking Dylan cover, Jason steamrolls Sheryl with an electrifying solo, but is only as good on his vocals  – B

Now That You Need Me – Taylor McFerrin – Bobby’s son… does twittiness run in the family? – C

These Walls – The Brand New Heavies, Mark Ronson, N’Dea Davenport – Kendrick Lamar had already laid it out for them, all the acid jazz London band had to do was follow the template. So that’s what they did – B+

Melee – Tory Lanez – Tory has been releasing one great song after another for two years, his rapping here is the best of the week – B+

I Don’t Wanna Ride The Rails No More – Vince Gill – It is fair enough to claim that Vince Gill has the best voice in pop since Aretha died, but it is also fair to say that his originals, thirty years into his career, are beyond slack; “When Amy Prays” was scary bad and “I Don’t Wanna Ride The Rails No More” is better and still sinking in bathos – C

On Chill (feat. Jeremih) – Wale, Jeremih – Jeremih has had a bad coupla years but he kills his verse and hands the song to Wale on a platter – B-

Power – We Are Messengers – Diabolical Christian Contemporary, the Irish cross bearers are using the old U2 template for he same old reasons – D+
