Cage The Elephant recorded a new version of their song ‘Broken Boy’ featuring punk icon Iggy Pop and the result is, as expected, a high energy machine with Pop’s baritone surfacing mid-way. The song, which is the opening track of their latest album ‘Social Cues’, is a hard dance floor with a touch of darkness trapped inside a dense symphony of synths, beaten by foot-tapping tempo. There are palpable anxiety and urgency in the song, which fits Pop like a post-punk glove, with his voice counterbalancing Matt Schultz’s higher pitch and the poppy sensibility of the catchy tune. However, besides the addition of Pop’s vocals, it’s exactly the same song.

The collaboration could not be more appropriate as Cage the Elephant’s album ‘Social Cues’ is nominated for Best Rock Album at the 62nd annual Grammys. while Iggy Pop will receive a Lifetime Achievement Award. As you may have heard, the Grammys have been shaken by controversy since former recording academy president and CEO Deborah Dugan has accused the organization to be corrupted and the voting system to be often rigged by board members… but this is a completely different topic, and Iggy Pop should receive his well-deserved award in complete serenity.

Last night, he was celebrating with a few close friends (he is pictured above with Henry Rollins and Joshua Homme) as this photo, posted on Queens of the Stone Age’s social media, demonstrates.

In a press release, Cage the Elephant frontman Matt Schultz had this to say about working with Iggy Pop: ‘He’s such a pioneer in so many fields: lyrically, culturally, poetically, visually, musically, and stylistically. Only a couple times in your life do you have the opportunity to share a moment with a visionary and beautiful human as he is. I’m grateful and blown away to have experienced and witnessed, not just his creativity, but also his kindness, humility, and humanness first hand. Such a testimony to the power of love.’
