Actors Who Play Music Make Johnny Depp Sick,… What?
Johnny Depp is probably living in his own universe, thinking he is above the flow and people like you and me. He is this special guy making movies for fun — he always seems to have fun while making a small fortune — and especially hanging out with big rock stars all the time… Let’s just say he could have chosen another set of words to give his opinion about actors making music?
According to the Sydney Morning Herald, at the Berlin premiere of his latest film, ‘Mortdecai’, Depp declared to journalists: ‘That whole idea [actors making music] for me is a sickening thing, it’s always just made me sick’… Err, hello Johnny, aren’t you constantly making or playing music with all your musician best friends? Friends like Marilyn Manson, Patti Smith, Ryan Adams, and so many others?
At least he is acknowledging this, but according to Johnny this is not really the same:
‘I’ve been very lucky to play on friends’ records and it’s still going. Music is still part of my life…. But you won’t be hearing The Johnny Depp Band. That won’t ever exist.’
May be not a Johnny Depp Band but his Wikipedia page has a paragraph about music long enough to make anyone laugh very hard after reading this: he has played slide guitar on Oasis’ ‘Fade In-Out’ and other songs, he is a member of P, a group featuring Butthole Surfers’ Gibby Haynes, RHCP’s Flea and Sex Pistols’ Steve Jones, he has played guitar on Marilyn Manson’s album ‘Born Villain’ and performed with him,… just to give a few examples. He is deeply connected with music, has appeared in many videos and has tons of friend musicians. This website even declares: he ‘has described music as his first love’ and ‘he is, first and foremost, a musician’.
Should I add that he has been involved with a series of bands (The Kids, Rock City Angels, P), has produced, directed videos and composed music… What part of this doesn’t he consider as music? Call him a wannabe-musician actor or a musician turned actor, whatever…. It is possible to have several talents, there is a long list of musicians who have proven to be good actors and vice versa, but I agree the Gwyneth Paltrow experience could totally make him sound right.
Anyway, you would expect Depp to understand what it is to be juggling between music and films, because, guess what? This is exactly what he is doing, but no he has no respect for these actors wanting to become musicians:
‘The kind of luxury now is, anybody with a certain amount of success, if you have a kind of musical being, you can go out and start a band and capitalize on your work in other areas,’ he added.
‘But I hate the idea, ‘Come see me play the guitar because you’ve seen me in 12 movies.’… It shouldn’t be [that way]. You want the people who are listening to the music to only be interested in the music.’
Does he even realize how ridiculous this sounds?
