A Story Of Betrayal: More On Marilyn Manson
It seems that we have only seen the tip of the iceberg of the Marilyn Manson story. Every day you can read more horror about Brian Warner. Not only more people are speaking out, but we are learning that his behavior went beyond the abuse of women.
According to a fan who made this list, these are the people who have (so far) spoken against Marilyn Manson: Sara Lee Lucas (drummer 1991-95), Jerrett Osburn (his sister dated Twiggy 1994-95), Trent Reznor (producer 1994-96), Bianca Allaine (fan 1995), P.R. Brown (graphic designer 1996-00), Jenna Jameson (pornstar, affair 1997), Dan Cleary (guitar technician 2007-08 and personal assistant 2014-15), Evan Rachel Wood (relationship 2007–08 -10), Wes Borland (guitarist 2008-09), Spencer Rollins (keyboardist 2013), Ashley Lindsay Morgan (model 2009-10), Laney Chantal (relationship with Twiggy 2009-17), Ashley Walters (photographer turned personal assistant 2010), Love Bailey (trans stylist 2011), Chloë Black (musician, dating 2011), Scarlett Kapella (painting model 2011), Charlyne Yi (actress from the series House 2011-12), Brittany Leigh (relationship with an unspecified band member 2011-13), Erica von Stein (model, photographer, fan 2012), Aaron Bird (painter, fan 2012), Gina E. Lara (fan 2012), Louise Keay Bell (animator, fan 2012-17), Agata Alexander (imagery & design 2012-19), Anonymous Kik girl #1 (fan 2014-20), Gabriella SourGirrrl (relationship 2015-16), Saint Sasha (dating 2016), Anonymous Kik girl #2 (fan 2017-21), Olivia Jaffe (graphic designer Heaven Upside Down 2017), Corey Feldman (spied on musician till 2017), Annie Jana Abrams (2020-21), Esmé Bianco (actress, not ready to share info yet), Carolina Ballesteros (model, relationship, not ready to share info yet), Sarah McNeilly (model, relationship period unknown), Torii Lynn (vintage Etsy shop owner, friend), Phoebe Bridgers (musician, fan and teenage experience), Otep (musician, dated one of Lindsay’s girlfriends), Ellie Rowsell (musician). To this, we could add some people who probably know things but have remained silent till now: Tony Ciulla (manager since 1996 up until now), Stoya (pornstar, dating 2009), Justin ‘Judd’ Sherman (ex-assistant), Lindsay Usich (relationship 2012-15 up until now) and all his (ex) bandmembers and (ex) collaborators… This is quite a list.
Evan Rachel Wood posted more on her Instagram account adding the testimony of Spencer Rollins (now a private account) who was allegedly harassed, threatened, and mentally tortured by Manson because he was just friendly with Wood: ‘Brian Warner weaponized anything he could get his hands on to terrorize me and when he couldn’t do that he attempted to go after my family and my dreams,’ he wrote.
After reading all these testimonies, it’s clear that Manson looks like a sociopath, a controlling and manipulative narcissist, enjoying sadistic practices, and frequently torturing his victims either mentally or physically or both. At this point, there’s no return, especially after reading some of the messages sent by Manson: ‘Fuck with me and the many young inspired kids that think Columbine was funny because it was random. They hate you. I didn’t ask them to. They know your every move. Address, number, brother’s special school…’ Do you see what he did here? Using a senseless high school massacre, that he was accused to have inspired, to threaten someone, and this, after defending himself many times from being the inspiration of the Columbine shooting. This is truly Machiavellian, and so utterly disappointing because it means that all the leagues of virtue, all the Christian parents and church preachers who warned us about Manson were right in the end. They told us Marilyn Manson was the devil, and he finally acts like one.
It’s also interesting to realize that all the imagery he was playing with, all that crazy Third Reich General accouterment was in fact far from being purely theatrical. One of the women who accused him wrote he asked her to bring him back as much Nazi memorabilia she could from Bangkok, and Evan Rachel Wood said he would call her ‘a ‘jew’ in a derogatory manner,’ and ‘he would draw swastikas over my bedside table when he was mad at me.’ Once again Manson would use some of his disgusting mind games by declaring that it was actually better than Wood didn’t have actual Jewish blood as her mother converted to the religion and wasn’t of Jewish descent. Manson also appears to have at least 2 Swastika tattoos, an M-logo shaped like a Swastika tattooed above his chest, and another one shaped like a cross incorporating a swastika in its center on his inside arm; he also has a skull and bones tattoo on his arm that resembles a Nazi-era ‘Totenkopf’ (‘death’s head’) symbol, and according to these photos, there is probably even more Nazi imagery on his skin. Manson can evoke whatever he wants to justify this, but collecting Nazi memorabilia is still weird and very suspicious, unless you own a WW2 museum, whereas the use of the swastika in old Nordic cultures doesn’t justify any tattoo. Manson also reportedly used the N-word repeatedly on many occasions, and there’s really no excuse for that.
There’s even a claim that the documentary titled ‘Demystifying the Devil’ contained scenes showing Manson wearing a KKK-marked sheet over his head, and feeding a black mouse, he called ‘nigger mouse,’ to a snake. These shocking scenes (and other ones) were confirmed here, but they have been apparently edited out of the current video.
Once again, this wasn’t a secret, the tattoos are visible on his skin, whereas the Nazi imagery was largely filtering to his art and stage display, even perfectly obvious in a song like ‘Pretty as a Swastika’… With all this Nazi paraphernalia, I can only imagine what kind of crowd Manson’s concerts have attracted over the years.
However, the most disturbing thing was (and probably still is to some extent) the power of this man. Everything was done in plain sight, or almost, everything was told and shown in his lyrics and disturbing videos, but more than anything else, Manson was not even hiding his abusive and controlling behavior from his entourage. ‘Everyone around him was expected to laugh and join in. If you did not or (god forbid) called him out, you were singled out and abused more. I have never been more scared in my life,’ Evan Rachel Wood wrote. And she revealed even more: last December, she had to file a police report against the rock star’s wife for ‘conspiring’ to release ‘underage’ photos. His wife Lindsay Usich, as well as another person named Leslee Lane, were trying to blackmail Wood and ruin her career by releasing photos showing her in Manson’s military general hat, with a Hitler mustache drawn on her. This is the one huge evidence that people around him, not only still enable his behavior, but support and even help it!
Limp Bizkit guitarist Wes Borland who also played in Manson’s band confirmed the allegations: ‘Every single thing that people have said about him is fucking true. So relax about the allegations towards the women… like when people say [bad things about] these women that are coming after him right now… fuck off, they are speaking the truth. I’m sorry to everyone on this podcast right now who doesn’t like this. But that guy, he’s amazingly talented, but he’s fucked up and he needs to be put in check and he needs to get sober and he needs to come to terms with his demons. He is a bad fucking guy.’
There is also this Facebook post by heavy metal band OTEP who affirms that Manson is also abusing his current wife: ‘Lyndsay used to call our house In the early hours & I was told she was hysterical because he was on another drug binge, threatening her life, throwing knives at her that stuck in the wall & verbally assaulting her.’
It’s one thing to write this on Facebook now, but shouldn’t they have alerted the authorities when this happened? Similarly, Evan Rachel Wood described people who were participating in the abuse, who were writing the Hitler mustache on her face, or watching anything that was happening, and nobody did anything because everyone was afraid of Manson. Wolf Alice’s Ellie Rowsell also recently revealed that Manson was filming up her skirt with a GoPro camera when she met him backstage, but the answer from his tour manager was simply ‘he does this kind of thing all the time.’ And the examples continue: Manson’s keyboard tech, Dan Cleary who toured with him in 2007-8, and worked as his personal assistant in 2014-2015, said about the same thing: ‘I saw first hand, over and over him being an abusive violent boyfriend to his girlfriend Lindsay. Over the almost two year stretch, I saw her in tears and him screaming and belittling her more often than I didn’t. He would threaten to kill her, cut her up, bury her, embarrass her to the world. Making her cry and fear him made him feel good. He would remind her that she’d be homeless without him and make fun of her learning-disabled family member. Everyone in his immediate circle knows this. But everyone (including myself) is afraid to say anything because of “the code”. It’s frowned upon to tell people’s private business. Those of us that stay quiet do it because we were making a living. And it’s hard to find work in music if you can’t keep your mouth shut. ‘
There will be more examples. Dan Cleary is quite honest, he said he shut up because he wanted to keep his job, the old tale of people sacrificing their morals because they benefit from the rock star. This is also the old Faustian bargain, that was even in Manson’s music.
Right now his fans are in 2 camps: those who are in denial, and still pretend all these women and people are lying, sheltering their crumbling world (and a 30-year investment) under an ‘innocent until proven guilty’ motto, despite the list above. And there are those (in growing number) who think all the evidence of abusive behavior were in plain sight although they refused to see them. They now feel guilty for liking the music, because if it’s not a parody, it’s not a satire as they used to believe, and it’s an awful feeling. It turns out that Manson was talking about himself. Manson wasn’t rebelling against a hypocrite society, he was this hypocrite. And looking at what he posted a few days ago, he is still trying to fool everyone.
I wanted to go back to Manson’s case because this is a story of betrayal, whether you are a fan or not. We are repeatedly told to separate the art from the artist and Manson’s case has now made this impossible, in his case art and artist are one. We are repeatedly told that a stage character is an act, but he has blurred the lines forever, and there’s no distinction to be made anymore. Manson has become the evilest part of his so-called made-up character, but he probably was this evil part on the first day. Manson is not the story of a guy playing the devil on stage and seduced by the dark side. Some fans will try to make of him a self-fulling prophecy, but I don’t buy it, he probably had this in him since the beginning, there’s no way this level of psychopathy is acquired. just go back to some early interviews – I just remember a 20-year-old interview with the LA Weekly describing lewd acts performed on animals off-stage and that was the end for me. But Manson knew about the rules about the art and the artist, he knew that people would think he was acting. The perversion of the case is that Manson betrayed everyone and played with one of our most sacred agreement: this is all an act. He knew he could get away with it and he actually did for many years, many decades.
